Davao City – True to the mandate of E.0. 70, also known as “End Local Communist Armed Conflict” (ELCAC), the Department of Labor and Employment XI has recently awarded a Kukum Dryer with Brick Kiln and other equipment that would be used for the production of white copra and charcoal to the fifty-five (55) members of the Dominga Association of Brgy. Dominga, Calinan District, this city.

The association, whose members also include former rebels, was formed and registered to DOLE, with the help of the 3rd Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army, under the command of Lt. Col. Joel Salaguinto.

The Kukum Dryer is an indirect natural draught dryer which sends off heat unto the coconut meat without the dirt from the road (if sun-dried), or without the smoke (if kiln-dried). Its heat exchange is made up of standard oil drums welded together with five semi-circular baffles installed alternately inside the drums. The advantage of Kukum dryer includes indirect contact of the coconut meat to the furnace fire thus eliminating combustion which would result to the burning of the whole production structure, the dryer would produce evenly distributed heat that would result to evenly dried copra, and the Kukum-dried copra are white and clean which would demand a higher price.

The project which was facilitated by DOLE’s Davao City Field Office was seen to improve the production of the coconut products mainly copra, and by-products (coconut shell charcoal) of the association.

In his inspirational message, DOLE XI Regional Director Raymundo G. Agravante said to the members of Dominga Association, “Take good care of this project. This will help increase the financial freedom of your group that would directly help your families. Manage well your copra and charcoal production, so that by the time that this project is evaluated and found out that it is gaining well, DOLE will be happy to give you another grant to enhance your business.”

“Dako kaayo ang kalipay sa among mga miyembro nga gitabangan mi sa DOLE. Mapadali ug mapasayon na namo karon ang pagkopras. Og mas nakanindot kay makahimo nami og puti ug limpyo nga kopras. Maningkamot gyod mi nga mapalambo ni nga proyekto para sa among kaugmaon. Tinood gyod diay nga motabang ang ahensya sa gobyerno kanamong mga pobre ug lumulupyo nga nia nagpuyo sa kabukiran. Daghang salamat, DOLE.”, said Luzviminda Usares, president of the association.

Attending the turnover ceremony of the P714,000.00 project were DOLE XI personnel; Roger Baay, PEACE 911 Focal Person; Commissioner Norman Baloro, Presidential Commission on Urban Poor; Juvy T. Alayon, OIC-Regional Manager of the Philippine Coconut Authority; Personnel from the office of Congressman Ungab (3rd District); Col. Nolasco A. Mempin, Commander of the 1003rd Brigade, PA, Lt. Col.
