Davao City – The Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC) handed cash assistance to Corporal Joel Villegas, a wounded in police operation, on 11 November 2019 during the Monday Flag Ceremony at PNP Region 11, Sergeant Quintin Merecido, Buhangin, Davao City.

Police Corporal Villegas sustained gunshot wounds on 14 September 2019 when a wanted suspect opened fire at his team manning a check point at Barangay Mahayag, Bunawan District, Davao City. The encounter resulted to the neutralization of the suspect after a hot pursuit operation was taken.

A 10,000 cash was extended to Corporal Villegas in addition to the EC sickness benefits, medical reimbursement and a 30,000 worth of livelihood assistance under the Employees’ Compensation Programs.

Pursuant to Board Resolution 18-02-07, the ECC has prescribed cash assistance amounting to 10,000 and 15,000 under its Quick Response Program for the work-connected injuries and death, respectively.

Stella Zipagan-Banawis, ECC Executive Director, intimated that the grant of cash assistance to victims of work-related contingencies is in consonance with the Commission’s quest to improving the benefits under the Employees’ Compensation Programs.  “Ways were contrived in order to provide optimal use of the EC Benefits for the needing workers.” she added.

 Police Colonel Edgar Alan O. Okubo, PRO 11 DRDO, expressed appreciation and gratitude to ECC over the assistance extended for Corporal Villegas. “This surely boosts the eagerness of PNP officers to serve the public with utmost dedication.”, he added.

The grant of EC Cash assistance is retroactively applied for work-related injuries or death transpired from 2016 onwards among uniformed personnel and from 2018 onwards among civilian workers. (ECC-REUXI)
